Iconic Cerveza Superior Celebrates its 125th Anniversary with U.S. Debut
Promising a “Superior” summer, Cerveza Superior is celebrating its 125th anniversary making its U.S. debut just in time for the hot days ahead. The popular Mexican beer’s staying power is rooted in its unparalleled brewing tradition. United States Beverage (USB) is rolling out Cerveza Superior in selected markets. The crisp, full-bodied Mexican lager from Orizaba, Veracruz, promises to stand out due to its popularity in Mexico and its legendary origins from one of the most important breweries in the 20th century.

“Cerveza Superior represents a 125-year history of world-class excellence in beer making. Our U.S. debut will delight longtime Superior fans and beer aficionados will now be able to enjoy the authentic taste of tradition. Superior’s heritage will inspire new generations to appreciate the lager from legendary Orizaba,” says, Miguel Angel Sánchez, Area Export Manager, Heineken Americas Export.

Superior was born before the Mexican Revolution as a beer for the most demanding palates. Cerveceria Moctezuma opened its doors in 1896 and the authentic Superior flavor began to emerge from the majestic peaks of Orizaba. The Orizaba region is known for abundant water from the melts of Pico de Orizaba or Citlatépetl, the third highest peak in North America standing at 18,491feet. The quality of the water, characterized by being soft and with a low mineral content, favors the production of this lager-style beer.

Available in select markets in U.S. for the first time, Cerveza Superior can be found in 6 pack bottles, 12 pack cans, and 24 oz can, at retail channels across the country, including grocery chains, independent stores, and restaurants.
Coquito Time!
Sure you can use various brands such as Goya, Coco Lopez, and even styles of rum (Bacardi, Don Q), but most won't tell the difference and still enjoy the easiest holiday tradition to make.
You'll need the following ingredients:
• 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk
•1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
•1 can (1 15 oz can) cream of coconut
•1/4 tsp growned cinnamon
•2 tsp vanilla
•1 1/2 cup dark spiced rum
•cinnamon sticks for garnish
•1 cup of our tea consisting of water, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 star anise, and 6 cloves
1-In a blender, start by adding the cream of coconut followed, the tea, ground cinnamon and vanilla and set blender on slow speed and cover on.

2-Now add evaporated milk and then condensed milk. In our version of the recipe we skipped the egg yoke for our preference.

3-Measure rum in the coconut can and pour last in your Coquito.

4-Before bottling your Coquito, insert one of the cinnamon sticks leftover from the tea.

5- Chill and serve. Also great over ice. Enjoy!
MOFONGO: Comfort Food at its Finest
Mashed up, garlicky, and one of Puerto Rico's staple dishes, Mofongo is comfort food at it's finest. Many Caribbean islands have similar type dishes using plantains, but Puerto Rico has perfected this savory side.

What's great about Mofongo is that it's super easy to prepare and can be paired with pork, shredded chicken or shrimp. Normally this dish comes with a side of delicious chicken broth to make Mofongo moist and yum.

Ingredients Needed for Mofongo
-2 green and unripe plantains
-3 garlic cloves or about a tablespoon
-2 cups of vegetable or canola oil for frying
-kosher salt
-5 ounces crackling pork rinds (chicharrones)
-3 tablespoons for extra virgin olive oil

Let's Cook

Step One:
Peel green plantain as you would a banana. Once peeled, cut plantain in slices of one inch thick.

Step Two:
Heat frying pan with two cups of vegetable or canola oil and add cut plantains and fry until golden.

Step Three:
Take plantains out of frying and put into a bowl. Here you will mash plantains as you would potatoes, add minced garlic, three tablespoons for extra virgin olive oil and kosher salt to taste.

Step Four:
Finally, Crush pork rinds or chicharrones and mix in as well and finito.

Making Broth
Chicken broth normally accompanies Puerto Rican mofongo for dipping. We personally like either Goya or Knorr brand cube broth, which are very simple to make.

SPOTLIGHT: Trejo's Tacos in LaLa Land
When I found out one of the biggest on camera villains had a taco place in Los Angeles, I just had to check it out. That macho was actor Danny Trejo, best known for his bad boy image in movies like Desperdo, Machete, Anchorman and most recent in Sons of Anarchy on FX.

The diverse actor and restauranteur owns Trejos Tacos with various locations throughout LA, including the one we visited in Hollywood.

Lets get to what we ate. We tried various tacos, the traditional carnitas that's made with pineapple, red onion, and fermented hot sauce. Also had the Baja fish taco that has a delicious beer battered, flaky white cod topped with pineapple salsa, chipotle slaw, avocado cream on a flour tortilla. Just pure yumminess!

The menu also includes other Mexican staples: burritos, chicharrones, Quesadillas, and rice and bean platters, "all hecho en Los Angeles".

Some of Danny's favorites include the Trejo's fried chicken platters and tacos, the beef Barbacoa and you can wash down with Trejo's own brand cerveza.

Definitely a stop for anyone visiting Los Angeles and don't forget to pick up his cookbook.
